Part 1 tests word recognition through multiple-choice questions involving everyday objects and actions, such as identifying where Ali should place his books or the correct verb for a father riding his motorbike to work. Part 2 introduces information-retrieval skills using a short advertisement from “The Sunschool Shop,” where pupils must determine what the poster primarily communicates. These foundational items are ideal for building confidence in basic reading comprehension and vocabulary recognition.

Part 3 features the story “Listen, Wooly, Listen,” about a sheep who ignores Missy the mouse’s warning and eats chillies from her garden, leading to a lesson about listening to advice. Questions in this section test word recognition, such as filling in a blank with a word from the text, as well as analysing skills through an opinion-based question asking whether Matt is a good mouse and why. This combination of listening comprehension and interpretive response makes it a well-rounded practice item.

Part 4 presents three short character descriptions — Mike, Kumar and Basir — each detailing their hobbies and weekly routines, followed by a question asking pupils to choose who they’d like to be friends with and justify their choice. This item tests the analysing construct, specifically interpreting ideas from text to form a personal opinion supported by reasoning. It’s an excellent format for practising both comprehension and opinion-based response writing.

Part 5 of this Year 4 English matriks tests word recognition skills, where pupils identify and spell out everyday items such as socks, a hat, and a watch based on given clues and function descriptions. Part 6 shifts to guided writing, requiring pupils to write a 40–50 word paragraph giving two reasons whether they would join a friend at a fun fair, drawing on personal context and covering content, communicative achievement, organisation, and language skills. Together these sections build vocabulary recall and structured written expression.
