MPT4 English – Part 2 Functional Text Reading
This section throws a lot of text types at pupils in quick succession — a notice, a short dialogue, an advertisement, a schedule, a lost-and-found announcement — each followed by a single comprehension question. It’s one of the most transferable skills in the whole paper, because these are exactly the texts pupils meet outside the classroom.
Each text type has its own structure and its own “location of the answer.” A notice usually states the key fact up front. A dialogue requires tracking who said what — the answer is often buried in the second or third line. A schedule requires simple comparison. Teaching pupils to recognise the text type first helps them know where to look.
Why pupils lose marks here
- Dialogue misattribution. In a two-person exchange, pupils sometimes answer with what the first speaker said, missing the response.
- Literal date/time slips. When a notice mentions two dates, pupils sometimes pick the first date rather than the correct, updated one.
- Overreading. Some pupils look for meaning that isn’t there, missing that the answer is usually explicit.
Example Year 4 English functional text reading questions
Notice: “Canteen closed for cleaning on Friday. Please bring your own snacks.”
Q: Why is the canteen closed on Friday?
A It is a public holiday B It is being cleaned C It has run out of food
Dialogue:
Ali: I can’t find my pencil case.
Farah: Did you check your desk?
Ali: Yes, it’s not there.
Farah: Maybe it’s in your bag.
Q: Where does Farah think the pencil case might be?
